Most online resources on how to learn French are surface-level, talking about listening to podcasts, practicing with native speakers, or even watching movies.

But, if, like most people, you’re very much into the details and step-by-step actionable tips, you’ve certainly wondered:

  • But what movie?

  • But what podcast?

  • But where can I find the resources?

Well, we hear you. The Get French Classes team spent 1 month working on this article, finding the best videos and resources, and building a curriculum-like learning program for you.

This guide will give you the nitty-gritty to learn French daily and practice through assignments, without worrying about where to start. Especially, you'll learn:

🇫🇷 Learn From Meghan's Mistakes!

Meghan spent months trying out techniques like vocabulary memorization, spaced repetition, and gamification apps like Duolingo. None of it worked, instead it ended up being total waste of time and money. She had a breakthrough only after discovering Get French Classes where she went through our active immersion, that helped her:

  1. build the daily habits of speaking French,

  2. practice under real-life scenarios through private French classes,

  3. improve fluency through group classes with other French learners.

From Debutant to A1 level in 2 months — What to learn in the first 2 months so you get your foundations right?

The first 2 months of your French are the most important ones. Why? Because without proper basics, you'll struggle to make meaningful progress from months two to six, when the bulk of learning hits.

However, with a strong grasp of the fundamentals, you will be able to accelerate your journey by immersing yourself in podcasts, videos, and French movies, thereby enhancing your input and output.

Month 1: Setting a strong foundation

In the first four weeks, you should primarily be focused on cultivating your conversational abilities.

This boils down to learning things like introducing yourself, discussing personal details about yourself, family members, friends, and colleagues, expressing likes and dislikes, and acquiring a vast vocabulary.

While the learning activities during this initial month will concentrate heavily on input (consuming learning materials), we have incorporated assignments that span spaced repetition, lightweight writing exercises, and spoken practice.

This balanced approach establishes a comprehensive groundwork for you, and if you ace the learning process excellently, you’ll be able to have basic conversations confidently on almost any everyday topic.

The key objectives for Month 1 are:

  1. Mastering core conversational phrases and greetings.

  2. Building a solid vocabulary base for everyday situations.

  3. Developing an understanding of basic French grammar structures.

  4. Practicing pronunciation and listening comprehension.

Week 1: Learn the basics

  • Day 1: Learn the French alphabet

On the first day, focus on learning the French alphabet and its pronunciation. You can start by watching a YouTube video that teaches the French alphabet, such as this "French Alphabet Pronunciation" by Learn French with Alexa.

Youtube video:

The video will help you understand the unique sounds of each letter in the French alphabet. After watching it, you should then practice writing and pronouncing each letter of the alphabet.

Pay special attention to the accents and diacritical marks, such as é, è, ê, ë, ç, à, â, î, ï, ô, ù, and û , as they change the pronunciation and meaning of words.

Assignment

Write out the French alphabet three times, practicing the pronunciation of each letter as you write.  Then, create a list of 10 French words that include accents or diacritical marks and practice writing and pronouncing them.
  • Day 2: Learn French civilities and how to greet

On the second day, learn the basic, everyday French greetings and introductions. You can also watch a YouTube video about that. We recommend the "French Greetings" video by The Travel Linguist.

Youtube video:

This video will teach you common phrases such as "Bonjour" ( hello ), "Salut" ( hi ), "Au revoir" ( goodbye ), "Merci" ( thank you ), "S'il vous plaît" ( please ), and "Je m'appelle..." ( My name is... ).

Display your poster or collage in a prominent place to help you memorize the vocabulary.
  • Day 7: Shoot a short video of yourself speaking and practicing what you learned so far

On the seventh day, review the material covered throughout the week. It’s also a good idea to complete a mini-project, such as making a short video introducing yourself and your family in French.

This project will help you practice the vocabulary and phrases you learned during the week. After completing the project, take some time to set goals for the upcoming week and adjust your learning plan if needed.

Bonjour!

Listen to this short A1-level French audio clip (1-2 minutes) and summarize the main points in writing.

Evaluation and Reflection

Here, evaluate your performance and reflect on your progress. Consider the following questions:

  1. In which areas did you perform well?

  2. Which areas need improvement?

  3. What strategies can you use to address the areas that need improvement?

  4. Are you on track to achieving your French learning goals? If not, what adjustments can you make to your learning plan?

Based on your evaluation and reflection, make any necessary changes to your learning plan for the upcoming month. This may include allocating more time to some skills, trying different learning resources, or seeking additional support from a tutor or language exchange partner.

Remember that progress in language learning is not always linear, and it's essential to celebrate your successes while also addressing areas that need improvement.

This assessment will help you determine whether you have achieved the A1 level in French and are ready to move on to the next level (A2).

Take a comprehensive A1 exam that covers all the topics and skills you’ve learned during the first two months. The exam should include the following sections:

  1. Listening comprehension

  2. Reading comprehension

  3. Writing

  4. Speaking

  5. Grammar and vocabulary

You can find comprehensive A1 exams online or in French learning textbooks. Some recommended resources for A1 exams include:

Assignments

On top of the exam, complete the following assignments to demonstrate your mastery of A1-level French:

  1. Write a 150-word letter to a French-speaking pen pal, introducing yourself and describing your daily routine, hobbies, and interests.

  2. Record a 6-minute video of yourself speaking in French about a recent trip or vacation you took. Use the passé composé to describe what you did and saw.

  3. Read this short A1-level French story (150-200 words) and write a summary of the main events and characters in French.

  1. Listen to this A1-level French podcast or dialogue (2-3 minutes) and answer comprehension questions about the main ideas and specific details.

  2. Create a presentation (5-7 minutes) in French about your hometown, including information about its location, landmarks, and interesting facts. Use appropriate vocabulary and grammar structures.

Evaluation and Reflection

After completing the comprehensive exam and assignments, evaluate your performance and reflect on your progress. Consider the following questions:

  1. Did you achieve the A1 level in French based on your exam results and assignment performance?

  2. Which areas did you excel in, and which areas still need improvement?

  3. How has your French language ability improved since the beginning of your learning journey?

  4. What strategies and resources have been most effective in helping you learn French?

  5. What are your goals for the next stage of your French learning journey (A2 level)?

Based on your evaluation and reflection, celebrate your achievements and set new goals for the upcoming months.

If you feel that you have not yet reached the A1 level, adjust your learning plan and continue practicing and reviewing the A1 content until you feel confident in your abilities.
